So one day last summer when I was still working in the store from hell an envelope came for me from Random House. I opened it up and it was this book called Dave Gorman's Googlewhack Adventure.
I looked at it and thought, that it looked interesting. Of course, that probably has something to do with the inordinate amount of time I spend on the internet. Also, that Google is the page that loads every single time I start up IE. I was also interested in the fact that it seemed to be the most insane and crazy non-fiction book I've ever looked at. I decided to read it.
I read mostly on my breaks at work, that's not the only time, but it is a full hour every day that I can read, usually without interruption. I sat in the backroom of the store and read this book, and had one of the girls I worked with come back and forth for various reasons, and then say "What is so funny?" And so I told her. And she decided to read it.
And then I told Tara, who also decided to read it. And Mel, and Jacq, etc.. etc.. Somehow I managed to handsell the book to almost every other bookseller I know. To customers? Not so much for some reason. I did give it to my mom to read, talk my aunt into reading it, and then give to an uncle for Christmas. Somehow I will get people to read this book.
So, randomly one day I got an email from Tara, which I imagine came from some sort of mailing list she'd joined at the Dave Gorman website. It announced that Dave would be coming to Toronto to do his Googlewhack stage show for 4 days only at the Harbourfront Centre. Immediately we decided to go. And then I talked Mike into coming with us. And then after that I told Mel, and she and Megan invited themselves along. Somehow, it became a party! :)
So what happened is, one day Dave Gorman was sitting checking his email and received a message from someone informing him that he was a googlewhack. He had no idea what a googlewhack was, so he replied to the message asking just what the hell is a googlewhack.
This is a whole thing apparently. There are very specific rules involved. Even after I read the book, I didn't try to googlewhack, even after listening to Dave Gorman talk about it for two hours last night, I haven't tried to do it. Why? Well, it's an awful time waster, or so I've heard. And while it seems like it may actually be satisfying to find one of these things...from what I've seen so far, it could become...well a bit of an obsession.
Anyway, I enjoyed the book greatly, I enjoyed the show greatly, and would recommend either, or both to anyone. Go buy the book, you really won't be disappointed.
